Can you work part-time while on SSDI in Virginia?

Many people receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) in Virginia wonder if they can work a few hours without losing their benefits. The answer is yes—part-time work is allowed, but strict income limits apply.

Find out if you qualify for SSDI benefits. Pre-qualify in 60 seconds for up to $4,018 per month and 12 months back pay.

Please answer a few questions to help us determine your eligibility.

The Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA) Limit in Virginia
  • In 2025, the SGA limit is $1,550 per month for most disabilities.
  • For individuals who are blind, the limit is $2,590 per month.
  • If your earnings are below these limits, you may work part-time and still keep your SSDI benefits.

Trial Work Period (TWP)

SSDI also allows a Trial Work Period, which lets you test your ability to return to work.

  • You can work for 9 months within a 60-month window while still receiving full SSDI benefits.
  • Any month you earn more than $1,110 (2025 threshold) counts as a trial work month.

Extended Period of Eligibility (EPE)

After your TWP ends, you enter the 36-month Extended Period of Eligibility.

  • During this time, you can continue receiving SSDI benefits for any month your earnings fall below the SGA level.
  • If you go over the limit, your benefits may stop—but can restart if your income drops again.

Reporting Requirements in Virginia

The SSA requires you to report all work activity. This includes:

  • Hours worked each week
  • Gross monthly earnings
  • Any changes in duties or pay

Failure to report can lead to overpayments, which you may have to pay back.
